We respectfully acknowledge that Byron Writers Festival takes place on the traditional lands of the Arakwal Bumberbin Peoples of the Bundjalung Nation. We pay respects to Elders past and present, and acknowledge them as the original storytellers of the lands and waterways of this Country.
Wesley Enoch AM is a Quandamooka writer, director and cultural leader from Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island). For more than three decades, he has been one of the most influential voices in Australian theatre, creating work that has transformed the nation’s understanding of First Nations stories and contemporary culture.
He is the co-writer, with Deborah Mailman, of the landmark The 7 Stages of Grieving, and the author of The Sunshine Club, Black Medea and The Story of the Miracles at Cookie’s Table. His directing credits include the original stage production of The Sapphires, as well as acclaimed productions of Black Diggers, Black Cockatoo, Appropriate and The Visitors.
Wesley has led some of Australia’s most significant cultural institutions, including Queensland Theatre and Sydney Festival, and currently serves as Chair of Creative Australia and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous Australians) at Queensland University of Technology.
A proud Quandamooka man, Wesley’s work explores history, identity, belonging and the power of storytelling to shape the future. His writing and leadership continue to influence Australia’s cultural life and public imagination.
