Writer

Sarah Ndiaye

Sarah Ndiaye is Mayor of Byron Shire Council, a role she has grown into since first being elected as Councillor in 2016, serving also as Deputy Mayor along the way. She has advocated fiercely for affordable housing, climate resilience, and a Byron that still belongs to the people who live there. She championed the policy that made Byron Shire the first council in Australia to cap short-term rental accommodation at 60 days, a small but significant act of giving the town back to its residents.

A former journalist and high school teacher, Sarah brings the instincts of both to public life: ask the hard questions, then explain the answer clearly.

She is also a mother, a music lover, and a thalassophile who believes the sea holds most of the answers. She is honoured to be on a panel about swimming, which, as far as she is concerned, is one of the most important subjects there is.
