Acknowledgement

We respectfully acknowledge that Byron Writers Festival takes place on the traditional lands of the Arakwal Bumberbin Peoples of the Bundjalung Nation. We pay respects to Elders past and present, and acknowledge them as the original storytellers of the lands and waterways of this Country.

Nell Schofield

Nell is well-known in Australia for her work as a performer, writer, broadcaster, activist and producer. She is President of Byron’s BayFM 99.9 where she co-hosts Roadtrip and premiers the podcast This Week In Cyberspace. Nell famously starred in Puberty Blues and wrote a monograph about her experience for Australian Screen Classics (Currency Press). She also wrote First Kiss (Allen and Unwin) and, with fellow NIDA graduates, created the original work Strictly Ballroom.

She has hosted programs with ABCTV, CNN International, Channel 9 and Showtime and has presented Sydney’s Mardi Gras broadcast for both ABC and SBS. In 2007 she became one of Al Gore's Climate Reality leaders and worked as Senior Policy Advisor with the Office of the Lord Mayor of Sydney. For The Sunrise Project she produced and directed Guarding the Galilee (2017) and A Mighty Force (2018) about the movement to stop Adani’s massive Carmichael coal mine in Central Queensland. She loves reading, writing and connecting people.

This is Nell’s fifth year living in Byron Shire and her third year chairing sessions for Byron Writers Festival.
