Acknowledgement

We respectfully acknowledge that Byron Writers Festival takes place on the traditional lands of the Arakwal Bumberbin Peoples of the Bundjalung Nation. We pay respects to Elders past and present, and acknowledge them as the original storytellers of the lands and waterways of this Country.

Julian Louis

Julian is the Artistic Director and Co CEO of NORPA (Northern Rivers Performing Arts) which is situated on Bundjalung country, Northern NSW.

For NORPA Julian has conceived and directed a significant body of original theatre works that are adventurous and highly popular. Examples include: Love For One Night (2022) – set at an iconic country  Hotel (which won a national IMPACT award), Dreamland (2016, 2019) – set in community halls and Railway Wonderland (2012, 2015) set on Lismore’s disused railway station. Most recently re directed Wildskin which was performed in a large warehouse in the Lismore Showgrounds.

Julian is co creator of the award-winning dance theatre work Cockfight with The Farm which has toured nationally and internationally; and is artistic director of the wildly successful Story Treehouse stage shows that have been performed extensively nationally and overseas. Teaching acting and theatre making has been a feature of Julian’s career having worked for many years with ATYP, Actors Centre Australia and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music to name a few.

Julian is a graduate of NIDA’s Directors course, holds a BA Communications in Theatre/Media from Charles Sturt University and trained as a performer in London with renowned teacher Phillippe Gaulier.
