We respectfully acknowledge that Byron Writers Festival takes place on the traditional lands of the Arakwal Bumberbin Peoples of the Bundjalung Nation. We pay respects to Elders past and present, and acknowledge them as the original storytellers of the lands and waterways of this Country.
Janet Swain is a choir leader who started her business, Song Dynasty Music and Events in 2000, in Sydney, Australia, and for the past 15 years has formed several community choirs backed by a belief in the importance of singing and song for all people, not just trained musicians. Song Dynasty Music also produces unique and exciting musical and theatrical events in the local region.
Janet has prepared professional choirs for Josh Groban, Delta Goodrem, MamaKin Spender and Ash Grunwald. She founded and directed the inaugural Festival of the Voice in Brunswick Heads, NSW. She has travelled and worked in Uganda with African Children’s Choir and Ubuntu. She works as an artist teacher in schools and community centres, for workshops, and summer camps.
Janet has conducted numerous large-scale community events including several massed choir performances which have involved administering, organising and teaching large numbers of adults and children. For 8 years she taught classroom music in local primary schools, and currently directs a large community choir called Big Voice. She composes and arranges music for choirs and vocal ensembleles. In 2024, she was successful in her bid for a role as local Labor Councillor with Byron Shire Council.
