Acknowledgement

We respectfully acknowledge that Byron Writers Festival takes place on the traditional lands of the Arakwal Bumberbin Peoples of the Bundjalung Nation. We pay respects to Elders past and present, and acknowledge them as the original storytellers of the lands and waterways of this Country.

Grace Lucas-Pennington

Grace Lucas-Pennington is a Bundjalung editor, mentor and writer living on Yuggera lands. She grew up mostly between Bundjalung country and the greater Logan/Brisbane area. Grace is the Senior Editor at the black&write! Indigenous Writing and Editing Project, founding member of the First Nations and People of Colour in Publishing Network, and serves on the Board of Byron Bay Writers Festival.

She was awarded the 2020 Nakata Brophy prize for poetry and was selected as a playwright for NORPA's Bundjaung Nghari – Indigenise 2023 under the direction of Rhoda Roberts AO. She is committed to developing a culturally appropriate writing sector, and promoting First Nations storytelling in all its forms.
