We respectfully acknowledge that Byron Writers Festival takes place on the traditional lands of the Arakwal Bumberbin Peoples of the Bundjalung Nation. We pay respects to Elders past and present, and acknowledge them as the original storytellers of the lands and waterways of this Country.
Ella Noah Bancroft is a Bundjalung woman, writer, poet, speaker and the CEO and founder of The Returning Indigenous Corporation, an Aboriginal-led charity based on Bundjalung Country in Northern NSW. Her work centres Indigenous knowledge systems, care economies, women’s leadership, food sovereignty, cultural revitalisation and healing through connection to Country.
Ella is the author of the self-published poetry collection It Takes Courage to Tell the Truth (2019), and the children’s books Sun and Moon and Baabinje’s Backyard, both created in collaboration with her mother, acclaimed Bundjalung artist Bronwyn Bancroft, who illustrated the stories. Her writing explores themes of animism, relationality, intergenerational healing, ecology and spirituality.
From 2022–2024, Ella was an opinion writer for the Koori Mail and has contributed writing to a range of online publications and public conversations focused on social change, Indigenous rights and cultural renewal. Alongside her literary work, Ella is a sought-after keynote speaker, sharing perspectives on decolonisation, community care, regenerative futures and Indigenous-led innovation.
