We respectfully acknowledge that Byron Writers Festival takes place on the traditional lands of the Arakwal Bumberbin Peoples of the Bundjalung Nation. We pay respects to Elders past and present, and acknowledge them as the original storytellers of the lands and waterways of this Country.
Damien Becker lives and writes on Bundjalung Country in Murwillumbah, NSW. His work draws on a lifetime of chronic illness, living with cystic fibrosis and as a double-lung transplant recipient.
Damien won the Flying Islands Prize for his 2026 debut collection Thin Reed Throat. The judges commended the work for ‘utilising the poetry to its full capacity… to tell a powerful and uplifting story that moves easily and naturally between laugh-out-loud funny and tear-evoking.’
An award-winning spoken word artist, his poems have been published by Best of Australian Poems, Cordite, Australian Poetry Journal, Suburban Review, Verity La, and Regional Review, among others.
