We respectfully acknowledge that Byron Writers Festival takes place on the traditional lands of the Arakwal Bumberbin Peoples of the Bundjalung Nation. We pay respects to Elders past and present, and acknowledge them as the original storytellers of the lands and waterways of this Country.
Associate Professor Corey Tutt OAM is a proud Kamilaroi man, author, science communicator, and the founder of DeadlyScience, a not-for-profit organisation that provides science books, resources, and mentoring to more than 800 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander schools across Australia. Corey started DeadlyScience in 2018 after discovering that some remote schools had fewer than 15 books.
Since then, he has helped deliver over 30,000 culturally relevant STEM resources to schools across the country, helping to bridge the education gap and inspire the next generation of Indigenous scientists, thinkers, and leaders. Corey also holds an Adjunct Associate Professorship in the School of Science at Western Sydney University and is a regular speaker at leading institutions including Harvard and Oxford.
As an author, Corey has published three celebrated books: The First Scientists – Winner of the 2023 CBCA Eve Pownall Award, This Book Thinks Ya Deadly, and most recently Caution: This Book Contains Deadly Reptiles – A fun, fact-filled look at Australia’s most fascinating and fearsome reptiles.
Corey continues to advocate for equity in science education and the power of culture and knowledge working hand in hand.
