Helen Garner in conversation with Kerry O'Brien

Join iconic Australian writer Helen Garner for an exploration of life on and off the page in conversation with legendary journalist Kerry O'Brien. With an oeuvre spanning fiction, 'near-fiction', and non-fiction, from personal diaries to courtrooms, Garner has now turned her insight, candour and wit to the footy field for her grandson's games in The Season. Don't miss this festival highlight to see two masters of their craft in celebration of a writing life.

About Helen Garner

Helen Garner writes novels, stories, screenplays and works of non-fiction. In 2006 she received the inaugural Melbourne Prize for Literature, and in 2016 she won the prestigious Windham–Campbell Literature Prize for non-fiction and the Western Australian Premier’s Book Award. In 2019 she was honoured with the Australia Council Award for Lifetime Achievement in Literature.

Her books include Monkey Grip, The Children’s Bach, Cosmo Cosmolino, The Spare Room, The First Stone, This House of Grief, Everywhere I Look, Yellow Notebook and One Day I’ll Remember This. Her most recent work is The Season.

About Kerry O'Brien

Kerry O’Brien is one of Australia’s most respected journalists with six Walkley Awards including the Gold Walkley and the Walkley for outstanding leadership. In his decades at the ABC he reported for the trail-blazing current affairs programs This Day Tonight and Four Corners, presented Lateline for six years, 7.30 for fifteen years and Four Corners for five. Kerry was a member of the Eminent Panel advising the Queensland Government on a path to treaty and has co-written The Voice to Parliament Handbook with Thomas Mayo.
